Features common to both Cocoa and SDL. This is a collection of all known boot ROMs dumped from various Gameboy models. These is the code that is responsible for displaying the scrolling Nintendo logo on startup, playing the iconic po-ling sound, as well as verifying the logo and header checksum in an attempt to lock out unlicensed cartridges.

The cartridge header stores information like the first 16 characters of the game’s title (0x134-0x143), region (0x14a), and even the nintendo logo (0x104-0x133). This is the same logo that is stored in the Gameboy’s boot loader, and is used to check if the cartridge is legitimate. If it is not correct, the game won’t load.

Confused/intimidated by the sheer number of backlight kits now? I don’t blame you. I had to create an image based guide just to keep everything straight myself. There’s a new section of the wiki that has a more subjective look at all the different kits: Backlight Mods (please give feedback here)

The Game Boy community has one of the largest modding communities out of other retro gaming communities. Mods are simply any modifications to the Game Boy system to change it from stock. They can be simple or complex. The most popular modifications add light to the screens of the older Game Boy systems that relied on external light to be seen or even retrofit a newer screen into the console. Other popular mods include painting systems for a custom look, adding rechargeable batteries to systems that didn’t have it, clearing up the fuzzy sound, or even speeding up and slowing down games. Some modders want lots of mods in their systems, some only want one or two. Whatever your preference, there are a lot of experienced modders here on discord happy to help when you run into trouble. For some of the more popular system specific mods, see below. Not all consoles are listed because not all consoles have mod kits available. Not all mod kits are listed either but submit a pull request (here) to correct this. Some kits may have generic versions or may be acquired through less than legitimate channels. Where applicable, the legitimate source for these kits is what is listed.

  • “Makho Battery Mod,” a cheap, high capacity (~950mAh), and 100% reversable battery mod – Youtube
    • Want to bump it up to 1640mAh? If your console is IPS modded, there should be room behind the LCD for two more batteries to install in parallel with the original. Game Boy Micro Mods

  • “Makho Battery Mod,” a cheap, high capacity (750+mAh*), and 100% reversable battery mod – Youtube
    • Do note that the video uses a lower quality cell. For better battery life, a more reputable 802535 battery vendor is recommended. 602535 also works but is lower capacity but will be perfectly drop-in and will not require removing the foam from the battery door.
  • Overclock mod - written guide with images

  • USB C / Micro USB Charge Port Replacement - Example 1 USB C images from sammy.sam and example 2 USB C reddit thread from u/nataliethenerd
    • Do note that you lose link port functionality with a mod like this

Some people like to remove the top screen from a Nintendo DS or DS Lite, to create a larger Game Boy Micro we affectionately named “Macro”. While this obviously isn’t an official product, we’ve compiled some videos, guides, and mods here to help consolidate information. If you’re okay with emulation, you can even perform these mods on a DSi or 3DS as well.

When you first turn on the game boy the Nintendo Logo will scroll down the screen and it chimes before the game starts, or if you don't have any game cartridge in it will show a black square like in this video:

What is happening when you first turn on the game boy is that it maps a 'boot ROM' that's hard coded into the CPU over the memory range 0x0000-0x0100, it starts off by executing this program (which includes scrolling down the logo as well as initializing some CPU settings) before control flow is given over to the game cartridge itself.
A lot of specific information about the boot rom is described in Patent 5134391: System for preventing the use of an unauthorized external memory, but in particular at the very end of execution it maps the cartridge back over the range 0x0000-0x0100 so that a game can't read the boot ROM at all: That means you can't just create your own game cartridge that prints out the code inside the boot ROM.
In fact no one extracted the boot ROM from the game boy until neviksti in 2003 - 14 years after the Game Boy was released. This was done by decapping this chip and locating the part of the chip which actually encodes the boot ROM:
and then zooming in to it and reading off the individual bits by eye!
given that you can disassembly it from binary into assembly code that shows al the operations that the boot ROM does, you can read that commented here on the gbdev wiki and it really does follow the flow chart given on the patent almost by the letter:

The boot ROM for the game boy color was dumped in 2009 (almost a decade later) by a different technique using overclocking to skip that last instruction which locks out the boot ROM. You can read about that here: http://www.fpgb.org/?page_id=17.
